Privacy Policy for CitizenUSA

Last updated: March 9, 2025

CitizenUSA ("we," "our," or "the app") is a U.S. citizenship test preparation app for iOS. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use the app.

1. Information We Collect

1.1 Information We Do Not Collect

  • We do not require you to create an account or sign in.
  • We do not collect your name, email, address, or other personally identifiable information.
  • We do not collect or store your quiz answers, flashcard progress, or study history on our servers. That data stays on your device.

1.2 Information Used by the App and Third Parties

Advertising (Google AdMob)
The app shows ads provided by Google AdMob. In doing so, Google may collect or use:

  • Device identifiers (e.g., advertising identifier)
  • IP address
  • General usage data related to ad delivery and performance

If you allow the app to request tracking (via Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt), ads may be personalized based on your interests. If you decline, you will still see ads, but they may be less relevant.
Google's privacy practices are described in Google's Privacy Policy and Google's ad policies.

Speech Recognition (Oral Interview)
The Oral Interview feature uses Apple's Speech framework. When you use it:

  • Your voice is captured via the device microphone.
  • Speech is processed to provide real-time recognition (e.g., for practice answers).
  • Processing may occur on your device or via Apple's services, in accordance with Apple's policies. We do not record, store, or transmit your voice or transcripts to our own servers.

Apple's handling of speech data is described in Apple's Privacy Policy and in the permissions and disclosures shown when you enable Speech Recognition and Microphone access.

Device and App Usage
We do not run our own analytics that collect personal data. Any analytics or diagnostics are limited to what Apple or Google may collect through the operating system or ad SDK, as described in their respective privacy policies.

2. How We Use Information

  • We do not operate servers that collect or process your personal information.
  • Advertising is delivered through Google AdMob; use of data for ads is governed by Google's policies.
  • Speech recognition is used only to power the in-app Oral Interview feature and is handled by Apple's systems; we do not use it for any other purpose.

3. Data Storage and Retention

  • Study progress and in-app preferences are stored locally on your device.
  • We do not retain your personal data on our servers because we do not collect it.
  • For data that Google or Apple collect, retention is governed by their respective privacy policies.

4. Data Sharing and Disclosure

We do not sell your personal information. We may share or disclose information only in these cases:

  • Service providers: Google (AdMob) and Apple (Speech Recognition) process data as described above under their own policies.
  • Legal: If required by law, court order, or government request.
  • Safety: If necessary to protect rights, safety, or property.

5. Your Choices

  • Ads: You can limit ad tracking in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking (iOS). Declining tracking when the app asks will result in less personalized ads.
  • Microphone / Speech: You can revoke microphone or speech recognition access in Settings → CitizenUSA (or Settings → Privacy & Security). The Oral Interview feature will not work without these permissions.
  • Local data: Uninstalling the app will remove locally stored progress and preferences.

6. Children's Privacy

The app is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will work to delete it in line with applicable law.

7. Security

We do not transmit or store your personal data on our own systems. For data processed by Apple (e.g., speech) or Google (e.g., ads), security practices are described in their respective privacy and security documentation.

8. International Users

The app is intended for users in the United States. If you use it from another country, note that data processed by third parties (e.g., Google, Apple) may be transferred and processed globally under their policies.

9. California and Other U.S. Privacy Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights (e.g., access, deletion, opt-out of "sale" or "sharing"). We do not sell personal information. For requests related to data that might be held by our ad or platform partners, you may need to use the mechanisms provided by those companies (e.g., Google's and Apple's privacy tools).

10. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when we do. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy. For significant changes, we may provide additional notice in the app or via the App Store listing.
