Privacy Policy for New Citizen

Last updated: February 28, 2026

New Citizen (“we,” “our,” or “the app”) is an iOS application that helps you study for the U.S. citizenship naturalization test. This privacy policy explains how we handle your information when you use the app.

1. Overview

New Citizen is designed with privacy in mind. We do not require an account or sign-in. Most of the data the app uses is stored only on your device and is not sent to our servers (we do not operate a backend that collects your study data).

2. Data Stored on Your Device

The following data is stored locally on your iPhone or iPad using the device’s standard storage (e.g., UserDefaults). This data stays on your device unless you delete the app or clear it through the app’s settings.

  • Preferences: Theme (light/dark/system), whether haptic feedback is on, and whether you have completed the onboarding flow.
  • Study progress: Which questions you marked as “Missed” or “Knew it,” and how many questions you have studied.
  • Favorites: Which civics questions you have marked as favorites.
  • Test history: Your practice test results (score, pass/fail, date and time), limited to the most recent 50 tests. You can view and manage this in Settings → Test history.

We do not collect your name, email, or any other personally identifying information. The data above is used only to provide study features (flashcards, practice tests, favorites, and progress) within the app.

3. Data We Do Not Collect

We do not:

  • Create or use user accounts.
  • Collect your name, email address, or phone number.
  • Collect precise location data.
  • Access your contacts, photos, or other apps.
  • Sell your data to anyone.

4. Third-Party Services: Advertising (Google AdMob)

The app may show advertisements provided by Google AdMob. When ads are displayed, Google may collect or use:

  • Device identifiers (such as advertising identifiers)
  • General device and usage information
  • Data used to show relevant ads and measure ad performance

This is governed by Google’s Privacy Policy:
https://policies.google.com/privacy

You can limit ad tracking in Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking (and related advertising settings) on your iOS device. Your choices there apply to apps that use advertising identifiers.

5. How Long We Keep Data

  • On your device: Data described in Section 2 remains until you delete the app or clear it (e.g., by clearing test history in the app, where supported). Deleting the app removes all of this data from the device.
  • AdMob: Data collected by Google through AdMob is retained according to Google’s privacy policy and your device and Google account settings.

6. Your Choices and Rights

  • Study and test data: Use Settings → Test history to view test history. Clearing or resetting data depends on the options we provide in the app (e.g., clearing test history). Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.
  • Advertising: Use your device’s Settings → Privacy & Security (and any “Advertising” or “Tracking” options) to limit ad tracking.
  • Access and deletion: Because we do not maintain accounts or a server database of your study data, there is no separate “account” to access or delete on our side. To delete all app data, delete the New Citizen app from your device.

If you are in a region that provides additional rights (e.g., GDPR, CCPA), you may contact us using the details below to exercise those rights to the extent they apply to the limited data we process.

7. Children’s Privacy

New Citizen is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will work to delete it.

8. Security

Data stored on your device is subject to your device’s security (e.g., device passcode, biometrics). We do not transmit your study progress, favorites, or test history to our own servers.

9. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The “Last updated” date at the top will be revised when we do. We encourage you to review this page periodically. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
